About BENNE
BENNE (Bennethon Engine for Nifty Narrative Experiences) is a web-based engine and VS Code editor for making point-and-click adventure games. You build rooms, characters, inventory, dialogs and interfaces in the BENNE Editor, write the game logic in BenneScript, and ship the result to the web or the desktop. It takes its lead from Adventure Game Studio and the classic LucasArts and Sierra adventures, and is a personal project, released as open source under the MIT License.
Built with
- TypeScript: the engine, the editor and BenneScript itself.
- Phaser 4: rendering, animation, input and audio in the browser.
- Vite: the development server and game builds.
- VS Code extension API: the BENNE Editor, bundled with webpack.
- Cytoscape.js and ELK: the editor's puzzle dependency charts.
- Electron and electron-builder: desktop builds of games.
- Aseprite: the art pipeline for sprites and animations.
- Vitest and Playwright: unit and end-to-end tests.
- VitePress: this website.
AI Usage
I built BENNE with the help of AI tools. ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude wrote much of the code, while I provided the architecture, direction, and feature design. I also designed the user experience for the BENNE Editor.
My goal was to spend less time building a game engine and more time doing what I love: making adventure games.
Some of my game artwork is AI-assisted and hand-edited.
